Professionally installed low-voltage fixtures run roughly $100 to $250 each, including the fixture itself, wiring, and labor. Most of that range comes down to fixture quality: cast brass fixtures cost more up front but hold up far better outdoors than composite or aluminum ones, which corrode and fade within a few years in coastal air.

Why Low-Voltage (12V) Is the Standard, Not Solar

There are three real options: line-voltage (120V), low-voltage (12V), and solar. Low-voltage has become the default for a reason. It's safer to install and touch, uses a fraction of the electricity of a 120V system, and gives a lighting designer full control over brightness and placement through a central transformer. Solar fixtures are cheap and require no wiring, but the light output is inconsistent and drops off fast in cloudy stretches or shaded planting beds, which makes them a poor fit for anything beyond a token accent light.

When You Actually Need a Permit

For most 12V systems, you won't need a permit in Orange County. The transformer runs off a standard outdoor outlet, and the low-voltage wiring itself doesn't trigger inspection. That changes if your project requires a new dedicated circuit run from your main electrical panel, or if any part of the work involves 120V line-voltage fixtures. In either of those cases, a permit and inspection are required, and that's work that should go through a licensed electrician regardless of permit status.

What Actually Makes a System Look Professional

  • Layering, not flood-lighting: a good design combines path lights, uplighting on trees or architectural features, and wash lighting on walls, rather than one uniform brightness across the whole yard.
  • Warm color temperature: 2700K-3000K reads as natural and residential; anything bluer looks like a parking lot.
  • Fixture placement that hides the fixture: the goal is to see the light, not the light source. Well lights and small uplights tucked into planting beds do this better than surface-mounted fixtures.
  • Smart or timer control: a photocell and timer combination means the system runs itself correctly without anyone remembering to flip a switch.
